Resolved Question: Reception traveling from Las Vegas, NV to Sacramento, CA.?

My boyfriend is traveling home from Las Vegas to Sacramento. He claims he is driving through mountains and that is why he has no reception, yet his phone is still ringing before going to voicemail. I thought that if you had no reception your phone either went straight to voicemail or said the caller was out of reach...? The troubling part is he claims he has no reception right after I ask him if anything happened with any of the girls in his group. Ummm yea. Sooo is he full of shit and should I freak out?
